STAYING HEALTHY

Several months before departing for South America, or as soon as possible if the trip is booked closer than eight weeks, you can contact the International Travelers Hotline run by the Centers for Disease Control (404) 332-4559, or Home Planet Exploration for the current immunization requirements.

Peru and Bolivia are equatorial third world countries, and it is recommended that all of the necessary immunizations be taken.  These should most likely include, but not be limited to:  diphtheria, hepatitis A, tetanus, polio, typhoid, and rabies.

Hepatitis A: requires a course of injections.  It is also possible to get 10 years of protection if a booster is taken within one year of initial inoculation.

Typhoid: This vaccination requires two shots.  the shots are taken a month apart and are good for 3 years.

Cholera:  The vaccination on the market offers little protection.   Many doctors recommend a prophelaxis treatment for Cholera with Doxycyclene, an antibiotic.

Rabies: Receiving a rabies vaccine does not fully protect you from rabies but it does buy you time in seeking treatment, which is important in the remote Andes. Rabies vaccination consist of three shots.  The initial shot, shot #2 in 7 days, shot #3 after 28 days.

Tetanus, polio, diphtheria: Boosters if necessary.
