In the afternoon we continue on to Empakai Crater. For those interested there is the option of walking the last few hours to our camp on the rim. This is easy gentle downhill walking along the crater rim with spectacular views of the active volcano Oldonyo Lengai, Lake Natron, and the Great Rift Valley to your left and Empakai crater to your right. The vehicles will go ahead to set up camp on the eastern crater rim.
- Day 8. Work our way back to Ngorongoro Crater.

This drive takes us into the highland wooded grasslands of the northern Serengeti ecosystem. The Arash is an incredible place. In this scenic rock kjope area off the beaten path and far away from any other tourist, we have the chance to explore on foot, stalking wildlife when the chance presents itself and observing the smaller details one often misses from a vehicle. Wildlife is fairly abundant and diverse most times of the year. Being on our own in this undeveloped wilderness nook makes this a special experience.

It is not possible to do a day to day description of the walks as we do not have set camps, and distances traveled each day vary depending on what is encountered and experienced along the way. Usually we will average 10-15 km (6-9 miles) per day. Each day begins before sunrise and we will try to be walking at first light in order to maximize use of those first cool hours before the sun gains strength. Usually at 12:00or 1:00 PM we are looking for a cool spot in the shade to camp. After lunch, there are options of resting and reading, bathing in the river, fishing, or taking an exploratory walk. While this is the general routine envisioned, it should be reemphasized it vary depending on circumstances encountered.
- Day 14. A three-hour drive takes us to Makwasa airstrip. Air charter out to Arusha.
- Day 15. Depart
Kilimanjaro Climbs
8 day package: 6 days on mountain for all routes. Longer if requested.
When to go: Tanzania has two distinct seasons and can be visited year round.
(Wet) December-April: December is the short rain season. The Serengeti turns into a carpet of velvet green. These rains are not unpleasant and provide refreshing change from the dry months. This signals the beginning of the wildebeest migration, which reaches full force by the beginning of March. During April wildlife is at a peak and so are the rains.
(Dry) August-October: By the end of October, Northern Tanzania will not have received substantial rainfall in 5 months. The dry season can be desperate at times on both humans and the wildlife. This is a good time to observe wildlife at water holes and along drying river channels, and a good time to visit the Grumeti River in the Serengeti. It is also the time to experience the best weather on Kilimanjaro.
Getting there: There are four flights a week to Kilimanjaro International Airport via Amsterdam on KLM. Daily flights via Amsterdam to Nairobi, Kenya- overland to Arusha, Tanzania |
